Reno Childcare — Supply vs Demand

Where young-child demand outruns licensed childcare supply across the Reno–Sparks metro, area by area.

Built from public listing directories, ACS 2024 5-year population data, and state licensing signals (2026). Facility capacities are largely unpublished — only 5 of 64 providers disclose licensed seats — so per-seat ratios are directional. Verify capacity directly before acting.

The Bottom Line

North Valleys / Stead is the metro's worst supply gap: the most under-5 children anywhere in Reno (4,437) sit against effectively zero real under-5 centers — one of the three providers closed in May 2026 and another is school-age-only. Sun Valley is its co-worst: 1,596 young children and zero enumerated providers.

But the recommended build TARGET is South Meadows / Damonte Ranch. It is the point where the family-geography map (fast-growing young-family rooftops) and the growth-corridor map of weak incumbents converge: the dominant local center (South Reno KinderCare) has collapsed to a 1.0 Yelp reputation, Kiddie Academy families report "waited over a year," and it is the one area with enough measured demand-per-seat (14:1) to underwrite a premium new center. Raw gap says North Valleys; executable opportunity says South Meadows.

Sorted most-underserved first: the two supply-collapsed areas (three or fewer providers) lead by absolute unmet demand, then the rest by children-per-facility, the comparable cross-area gap metric. The children-per-seat cell is shaded red by severity; it is only reliable for South Meadows (3 of 8 seats known) and marked directional elsewhere. "n/a" = no facility in that area published a licensed capacity. This column is the demand-minus-supply subtraction: young children divided by known licensed seats.
